Many veterinarians are stopping the practice of declawing cats, so it is becomming more common to adopt cats with claws. If you are adopting a cat that either can’t or won’t be declawed, you do have a number of options available to you to keep them from destroying your furniture.
You could purchase some nail covers for your cat. These are little rubber covers that you glue on to their nails with super glue. These are completely humane and will fall off when the cat sheds that nail. Plan on re applying them once every three weeks or a month. The cats dont’ even really seem to notice them being on. The bonus is these come in a rainbow of colors so you can have a bit of fun with this too. Another options is to get a scratching toy for them. There are some toys that are created with corrugated cardboard that has catnip embedded in it. Cats basically train themselves to use these cardboard scratching toys over your chairs because of the catnip. What makes these toys a great buy is you can replace the cardboard as it wears out and still have the original frame of the toy. You will find the scratching post is a bit different then the scratching toy. Posts typically have a natural fiber such as hemp wrapped around it. You can curtail your cats using your furniture to scratch on by placing a post close by. Cats love the texture of the heavy duity cords. A bonus to the posts is they are very long lasting. If you have the room you would also decide to get a carpeted cat playground. These are tall structures that are covered by carpets that are somewhat like a tree house. Cats love to climb, sleep, and play all over this type of toy. The down side is these can be on the expensive side and they do tend to take up a lot of room. Don’t feel like you have to declaw your cat if you don’t want to. Often times if cats are given the option they can be trained to use these ideal things to scratch on. It may take a bit of persistence on your part, but it can certainly be done.-
